From Recovery to the NYC Marathon: My Journey with The Phoenix

Twelve and a half years ago, I entered recovery from food addiction and a dependence on alcohol and marijuana. At the time, I weighed over 260 pounds and could barely walk, let alone run. My recovery program saved my life, guiding me to a right-sized body and a new lease on life. But despite my physical progress, I still struggled with motivation. I wanted to be active—especially to run—but I just couldn’t get off the couch. And that lack of action began to chip away at my integrity and my recovery.

That changed in September 2021, when I found The Phoenix—a free sober active community that only asks for 48 hours of sobriety to participate. I had that. So I showed up for a CrossFit class—and from that day forward, everything changed.

Since then, I’ve leaned into fitness. I committed to CrossFit. I started running. I’ve run countless 5Ks, completed the Beach to Beacon 10K, and even tackled a half marathon. And now I’ve set my sights on the 2025 NYC Marathon—an iconic event that represents the ultimate runner’s milestone.

The energy of New York City is unmatched. I went to spectate the marathon last year, and I was hooked. The roar of the crowds, the unity of purpose, the raw determination—it felt like a 26.2-mile celebration of life, community, and grit. I can’t imagine running any other marathon. I’ve been invited to join The Phoenix’s charity team for this year’s race, and it feels like the perfect fit—my recovery supporting my fitness, and my fitness strengthening my recovery.

To run, I need to raise $3,500 for The Phoenix—funds that go directly toward helping others like me: people in recovery, isolated and stuck, find connection, movement, and healing. This organization helped me get off the couch and into a life I love. Now, I’m asking for your support to help me give that gift to others.

This journey is more than 26.2 miles. It’s about transformation, perseverance, and the power of community.

Thank you for considering supporting me. I’m humbled, honored, and filled with gratitude.
